GRADUATE PROGRAMS

1)      Master’s Degree Programs

          (Master of Science, Ms.)

        The master’s degree program may be conducted in two ways, being with or without thesis.

        The permission for transfer between the master’s degree programs with or without thesis shall be given by the Governing Boards of the Institute upon the proposal of the main branches of science.The applications for transfer have to be made until the end of the fourth semester. In master’s degree programs with and without thesis, transfer can be made for one time.

a)      Education of Master’s Degree With Thesis

      The aim of the education of master’s degree with thesis is to make the student acquire the ability to access knowledge by means of scientific research, to evaluate knowledge and to interpret knowledge. This program shall consist of minimum seven courses, one workshop course and a thesis study, provided that the total credits will not be less than 21 credits. The workshop and the thesis study have no credits, and they shall be assessed as successful or unsuccessful.

       The duration for completing the master’s degree program with thesis is four semesters. The students who completed the courses with credit and the workshop course successfully. but could not enter the thesis examination for they could not complete their thesis studies until the end of four semesters, may be given a time extension of maximum two semesters for depending their thesis in front of the jury.

      The academic board of the Institute main branch of science shall propose a thesis subject and a thesis advisor for every student latest until the end of the second semester.

       The jury for master’s degree thesis consist of three members one of the members being thesis advisor of the student and at least one member being from another main branch of science or from another higher education institution. The jury takes the student to thesis examination. The thesis examination shall last 45-90 minutes.The jury make its justified “acceptance”, “refusal” or  “correction” desicion.

     A student in master’s degree program who succesffuly completed shall be granted Master’s Degree Diploma.

b)      Education of Master’s Degree Without Thesis

      The aim of the master’s degree program without thesis is to give the student profound knowledge on professional matters and show how to use the existing knowledge in practice.This program shall consist of minimum ten courses and the course of semester project , provided that the total credits will not be less than thirty credits.The course of semester project has no credits.

      In the master’s degree programs without thesis, the academic board of the Institute main branch of science shall determine for every student a lecturer latest until the end of the first semester.

        The duration for comleting the master’s degree program without thesis is maximum six semesters.

     A student in master’s degree program without thesis who successfully completed credit lessons and semester project shall be granted Master’s Degree Diploma.

2)      Doctorate Education

       The aim of the doctorate program is to give the student the ability to make independent researches, to interpret scientific incidents by investigating them with a wide and profound point of view and to determine the steps required to reach new syntheses. The thesis to be prepared at the end of the thesis study has to fulfil one of the characteristics below:

  • Introduce an innovation to science
  • Develop a new scientific method
  • Apply a known method in a new field.

      The doctorate program shall consist of minimum seven courses, the workshop study, the competency examination, the thesis proposal course and the thesis study, The total credits will not be less than 21 credits.

      The duration for completing the doctorate program is eight semesters. But it may be given a time extension of maximum four semesters.

        The academic board of the Institute main branch of science shall propose the Institute a thesis advisor for each  student. The thesis advisors shall be selected from among the lecturers.

           Compotency Examination

         The aim of the competency examination is to test whether the student has profound knowledge about the subjects related with his/her basic and doctorate studies. The competency examinations shall be made twice a year.

       The students who have completed the credits and fulfilled the other conditions may enter the competency examination.

       The competency examinations shall be arranged and executed by the Doctorate Competency Committee consisting of five members . The doctorate competency examination shall be made in two sections, being written and oral.

      In order to be eligible to enter doctorate competency examination, it is required to score minimum 60 points out of 100 points in foreing language level determination examination.

     The doctorate students who failed foreing language compotency examination shall be given a time extension of one calendar year. The students who will not successfull in the related foreing language competency examination at the end of this period shall be expunged from register.

      The students who failed the competency examination shall be taken to examination again within the next semester. The students who failed this examination as well shall be expunged from register.

           Thesis Monitoring Committee

       For the students who succeeded the competency examination, a thesis monitoring committee shall be formed within one month.

        The thesis monitoring committee shall consist of three lecturers.

      The student who succeeded the doctorate competency examination shall (latest within six months)  defend in front of the thesis monitoring committee his/her thesis proposal covering the aim, method and workplan of the research.

        For the student whose thesis proposal was accepted, the thesis monitoring committee shall meet twice a year being once between January – June and July-December.The thesis study of the students shall be determined as “successful” or “unsuccesfull” by the committee. The student who was considered to be unsuccessfull for two times consecutively shall be expunged from register.

        The students in doctorate programs have to defend their theses in front of the jury.The jury shall consist of five members, three members being the lecturers in the thesis monitoring committee of the students and at least one member being a lecturer from another higher education institution. The jury take the student to thesis examination. The thesis examination shall consist of the presentation of the thesis study and the question-answer section following the presentation. The duration is 60-120 minutes. The thesis examination shall be made open to audience.

      After the completion of thesis examination, the jury make its justified “acceptance”,”refusal” or “correction” desicion with full majority about the thesis.

        The student whose thesis was refused shall be expunged from register. The student whose thesis was decided to be correctted shall make the required corrections latest within six months and defend his thesis again in front of the same jury.

          The student whose thesis was refused at the end of such defense shall be expunged from register.

         On condition of being successful in thesis examination and fullfilling the other conditions, the student shall be entitled to receive Doctorate Diploma.
